The government launched the ‘Making public services work for you with your digital identity’ consultation, which closed in June 2026. The government proposed a voluntary national digital ID and sought public input on designing a system that is useful, inclusive, and trusted. MWNUK submitted evidence to the cabinet office digital ID consultation raising concerns that a national digital ID system could increase digital exclusion, inequality, privacy risks, surveillance, and data security concerns, particularly for Muslim women and victims of domestic abuse. While acknowledging potential benefits such as improved efficiency and easier access to services, MWNUK questioned whether a new digital system is necessary given existing forms of identification and stressed the need for strong safeguards, data protection measures, and non-digital alternatives to prevent further marginalisation.
