Summer 2024 Disorder Inquiry (Home Affairs Select Committee)
December 2024
MWNUK responded to the call for evidence from the Home Affairs Committee Summer 2024 disorder inquiry. The inquiry examined the policing response to the disorder in England and Wales. MWNUK shared several key recommendations in response to the inquiry, including: • The need for proactive steps to promote transparency, accountability, and reduce misinformation during crises. • Many influencers need to be held accountable for their actions, allowing misinformation to spread unchecked. • The rise of the far-right has exploited fears about Muslims, contributing to the rapid spread of riots after the Southport incident. • More robust laws to hold social media companies accountable for spreading misinformation and failing to remove content that incites hatred. • Stronger legislation to address racial and religious hatred.
