Watch this short 1 minute clip and share.
Its hightime we look closer to home and ask ourselves what are we doing? Rather than brushing this issue under the carpet. Islam categorically condemns this heinous act. Education and awareness is essential. Please share.
Nazmin was nominated to become a torchbearer by her University friend Charlotte Evans for all the work Nazmin had undertaken to promote equality and diversity and for how she had gone out of her way to help vulnerable members of society. As well as volunteering at Newcastle Law Centre to work on Immigration, Asylum and Employment law cases, Nazmin acted as Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) Representative for Northumbria Student Union and then began writing on StretLaw on legal and cultural affairs. She subsequently became Associate Editor of StretLaw in February 2012 as well as Co-opted Board Member for MWNUK in November 2011. Charlotte felt this dedication deserved to be recognised and when Nazmin was selected to carry the torch she was told that it was because her perseverance had been a real inspiration.
Carrying the torch itself had been an overwhelming experience. Nazmin had been excited about it since she found out but on the day itself she became extremely nervous at the thought that so many people will be looking at her. However when she was given the torch and saw family and friends as well as strangers cheering her on she realised that this was not just about her but rather about everyone who had supported her and most importantly about the goals she had set. It was a truly humbling experience hearing the accounts of other torchbearers and it reminded her that the power to achieve something is actually within you and you just need that little bit of support to get everything started.

Well Done Nazmin!
MWNUK Board Director Nazmin Akthar carried the Olympic torch in Sunderland on 16 June 2012.
More about Nazmin:
Nazmin was called to the Bar in 2010 after completing her Law degree at the University of Durham and BVC at University of Northumbria. She then also completed her Masters in Law at Northumbria University in which her dissertation concentrated on the treatment of women offenders by the legal system. Nazmin has simultaneously worked in the financial services sector for five years. After spending time volunteering for different legal organisations including in Employment and Immigration law at a Law Centre for six months, she now acts as a County Court Advocate.
She has been an avid supporter of equality and diversity throughout her life and as such has acted both as a Branch & Area Union Representative for the bank that she worked for and was also heavily involved with Northumbria Student Union as a Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) Student Representative. As well as having links to the legal profession and financial sector, Nazmin has continued her interest in journalism in various capacities and prefers to write in particular on the plight of ethnic minority Muslim women who she believes tend to become lost voices.

Dear Member
It is with the deepest sadness and sorrow that we announce the death of our friend, colleague and Chair of Muslim Women’s Network UK, Cassandra Balchin.
Although Cassandra was only diagnosed a few months ago, she has unfortunately lost her battle against cancer.
Cassandra was a great women’s rights activist and worked tirelessly on advancing the rights of Muslim women. She was particularly an expert in family laws, marriage, divorce, parallel legal systems /plural legal orders and religious fundamentalisms. She wrote and contributed to many publications.
She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her across the world.
Our thoughts and prayers are now with her family and those who were close to her.
No words can adequately express our sadness at Cass’s death or our gratitude for the honour and privilege to work with her. We will honor her memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work she loved so much.
With regret

Salma Bi\'s Story - Executive Director of Believe In M.A.D (Making A Difference)
Believe In M.A.D only believes and aims to do mad things, things that no one has ever attempted, and perhaps no one else ever will. We provide opportunity for other people to be part of ‘Making A Difference’ by making History.
Believe In M.A.D work closely with disability/syndrome organisations by reflecting on how their quality of life and to show appreciation to everyone who accepts them as individuals.
Salma Bi is the drive behind setting the First record of its kind:
FIRST EVER WOMEN’S FUTSAL MARATHON
"I’m proud to Showpiece an extravagant event on the 10th March 2012 highlighting women’s sport and the impact it has had on my life."
Where the idea started?
"I heard about a marathon record in early September 2011 when the Brazil Indoor Futsal team set a record. It was later attempted by the Liverpool Futsal team, then Middlesbrough, then Japan and so forth. All these attempts where set by Men and played by men. It occurred to me that NO women’s team had ever attempted such a record anywhere in the world.
So, my team approached Guinness via fast-track to find out whether we could attempt the challenge. Within three days we had a response to say that if we were to attempt a marathon, it had to beat the 37 hour record, regardless of the gender of the team.
So, we decided to go ahead with the challenge! And we knew that because it was such a big challenge and so different, our efforts could also support a good cause. We decided to support the National Autistic Society as this was something close to me because working as a Full-time Haemodialysis Nurse looking after patients who may never leave treatment; it is a very difficult and rewarding job to provide. My niece was born with global-neuron which has delayed her speech and mobility but there is hope.
Having played football at leisure centres for two years with my team, before hearing about futsal in Birmingham, we finally entered a team called ‘The Great White Sharks’ last October. I was proud to captain the First ever Muslim/Asian team to ever participate in a league for Futsal in Birmingham.
This was also there perfect time to launch my organisation ‘Believe in MAD’. We managed to obtain a sponsored kit for the team, with a blog to show our progress and to get followers supporting us. PA Editor Dave Jones continues to do a fantastic job by backing the girls and raising our spirits up by writing up reports every night post game. We finished at a good position last season and now in our second season we look forward to working playing hard by beating top teams with a respectable score.
The majority of the girls in our team wear the hijab and are covered in public places for religious reasons. This could have diminished our chances of playing any Futsal games but credit goes to Gemma Smith for the hard work and organisation of the suitable facility provided for us.
Working on this project has been fun and demanding at times. The challenges are there as a hurdle, all we have to do is jump over them. Finding players, funding, organisation support etc was an issue at times but coming closer to the date of the event we know we will Pull-off something amazing.
The stage is set to perform on; Our Theme is Celebrating International Women’s Day, while embracing the Sporting Year 2012! It’s time to be part of the games we really enjoy and show the world what is possible." (Salma Bi)
The Story Now
Over the last 2 weeks the press release to launch our challenge was distributed. We have almost got a sufficient amount of numbers for two teams to participate in.
Two Teams, Two Goal-Keepers, Two Captains: Team Salma (Red) Vs Team Gemma (Blue).
Every Player once registered each player is to get sponsors for charity.
This is not only to get people to raise money for our selected Autism charity, but also to raise awareness of Futsal as a Sport itself.
The Event Itself
Challenge: 40 ladies attempting to set a women’s marathon Futsal record of 10 hours non-stop football playing! Date: Saturday, March 10, 2012 Time: Between 9am and 7pm Venue: Birmingham International Futsal Arena
Players and affiliated officials will be provided with free drinks, food, Medallion and a Certificate as gesture for being part of new record. Also to make it even more fun Every 10th Goal will be prized! Photographer booked, Balloons Ordered and Game on! So we not only set a 10 Hour Record but we also put on a show for the World to remember.

INTERNATIONAL ADVOCACY TRAININGAND CAPACITY BUILDING for WOMEN FROM MINORITY POPULATIONS IN THE UK
Selection Process There is an opportunity for women from Minority backgrounds (NOT ONLY MUSLIM WOMEN);to take part in the United Nation’s 56th Commission on the Status of Women, which is to take place in New York, United States. This is specifically for women working in related fields, i.e. working in areas of Equal Opportunities for women, improving civic and political participation; to become an integral part of their communities and wider societies they live in, to contribute their existing skills and enhance and gain further skills in order to take their work further afield. This is an opportunity to take part as well as having the chance to highlight your work and good practice and share each other’s experiences and support each other to go forward in this challenging area of work.
At this stage it must stressed that in order for the successful candidates to take part funding has to be secured. Many candidates taking part from across the world are using their own resources to fund themselves. However EIMAN are looking to recruit 12 women from across the UK and offer them the right women opportunity and to this end the EIMAN are working hard to secure funding. It must be realised that a certain amount of work and the selection process will need to take place prior to any decision made on whether the funding is going to be made available or not. Therefore flexibility in the recruitment process is a pre-requisite.
So if you are happy to take this step and accept the goodwill that funding is being sought for you to have this opportunity then the first step is to fill in the application form and the accreditation form in order to start the process. If your application is successful at the first step then you will be called for an interview. If you are successful in gaining a place then so long as the funding has been secured then there will be the opportunity to attend the conference in New York. It also has to be stipulated that if you have gained a place on the programme there is no guarantee that you will be selected for the event at the United Nations.
Ultimately, a number of the successful candidates will make representations at the United Nation’s event and selection will be made for a few to go forward. The accreditation form is filled in specifically for the United Nation’s event but all Empowering Inspiring Motivating Muslim Women thru Advocacy & Nurturing candidates must bear in mind that going through accreditation process does not guarantee you a place. Also, if chosen to go to the United Nations then you must ensure that if you are unable to attend you may be asked to arrange for someone else to take your place. This will be in the event if a suitable candidate cannot be selected from the other existing candidates.
Finally it has to be stressed that though this is a unique opportunity nevertheless due to the restricted funding the means by which the candidates will be travelling and staying in New York will be very basic. The lodgings will be very basic where the candidates will have to be ready to share not only the lodgings but also sleeping spaces and even sharing beds where necessary. This is to further stress that the trip to New York and the ethos that the candidates will have to imbue will be one of hard work and making the most of the opportunity afforded to them.
Should you be willing to accept all of the above kindly proceed to apply.
EIMAN looks forward to receiving a precise of work you are currently involved in and your completed accreditation form. DEADLINE IS 13th JANUARY 2012 EMAIL:- contact@eiman.org.uk

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.
Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates, including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
The theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign is:
“From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World” Let\'s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!
The 16 Days of Activism focuses on: • raising awareness at the local, national, regional and international levels about gender-based violence • strengthening local work • linking local and global work • providing a forum for dialogue and strategy-sharing • pressuring governments to implement commitments made in national and international legal instruments • demonstrating the solidarity of activists around the world
If you are taking action, organizing events, workshops and more, to mark the 16 Days of Activism, post about them on www.saynotoviolence.org.

The findings raise concerns that the vast majority of abused and neglected children are not getting the vital help they need - either from statutory services or informal support networks in the community.
The conferences will • provide detailed information on the study • provide an opportunity to reflect on the research findings and apply them to local practice in a multi-agency context • bring together key representatives from children’s services • explore how the key findings can help you to improve services for children.

Fawcett Society
The Fawcett Society have highlighted concerns that the 2011 Budget severely threatens progress made at tackling gender inequality.
We have also seen the government recently launch the the 'Red Tape Challenge' website to seek the views of the public on which regulations should stay and which should go.
What does this mean for women?
Fawcett is extremely concerned about the ‘Equalities’ section of this site. The government is seeking the public’s views on the 2010 Equality Act. It even asks whether the Act should be ‘scrapped altogether?’
Any backwards step, let alone a full repeal of this Act, would represent a transgression on the rights of women in the UK today and would severely undermine efforts to achieve equality between women and men in all spheres of life.
The Equality Act is our tool as women to really hold gender discrimination to account.
3. Take 2 minutes to register your comments on the suggestion to scrap the 2010 Equality Act!

PRESS RELEASE
Website aims to connect those working with Muslim youth
A website that aims to bring together those working with Muslim youth was launched on Saturday 23rd October, at the GPU conference, ExCel, London.
With the ambitious motto of 'the one-stop shop for those working with Muslim youth', the Connect Online website is an expansion of the highly successful quarterly newsletter Connect, which has developed into a resource providing news, a blog, articles, projects, videos, research and policy information, and many other resources for those working with Muslim youth.
Connect Online founder Tafazal Mohammad said: "The website is a fantastic resource for youth and community workers, teachers, social workers, health professionals and anyone else working with Muslim youth. It aims to gather all onto one platform to explore and learn together in this area of emerging practice."
Mr Mohammad added: "It is essential that we are able to share resources, hear the views, success stories, and ideas of all working with Muslim youth to develop together as a community of practice."
Connect online is completely free to join. Through the website it is hoped that many individuals and organisations across the UK can come together to best fulfill the needs of the Muslim Youth.
"We need to hear from the huge diversity of groups across the country, big and small, and encourage everyone to contribute and connect online" said Mohammad.
An exciting new website called ‘Big Sister’ will be launched soon. This information-packed resource aims to highlight inspirational Muslim female role models from the past, present, and future. The many categories included are: UK Big Sisters, Pioneering Big Sisters, Sporty Big Sisters, Arty Big Sisters, Big Sisters in History.... the enthralling list goes on!
The aim of this website is not only to inspire young Muslim girls, but to inspire other Muslim women, Muslim men, and everyone else who believes in being the best they can be.
So if you too are striving for something, have overcome obstacles, and have a story- then the chances are that YOU ARE A BIG SISTER.
In addition to the website, Birmingham will be producing a role-modelling kit to be made available to local schools. This will include posters, a booklet, and a mobile exhibition of local role models. It is hoped that Muslim women ‘Big Sisters’ from Birmingham will be showcased, alongside the work they do. So PLEASE get involved. It’s a great opportunity for the city and for all women involved.
Simply fill in the attached profile form and allow your story to be an inspiration.
