Faeeza Vaid is currently the Coordinator of the Muslim Women’s Network UK. MWNUK aims to provide a channel between Muslim women and the Government allowing the diverse views of Muslim women to reach Government. It also aims to raise awareness across the country and in Government of issues which may be of interest or concern to Muslim women by disseminating information such as reports, statistics, and research through the MWN-UK website.
Faeeza is also Chairperson to a grassroots group called ‘Sister 2 Sister’ in Birmingham. The group aims to provide women of all ages with opportunities to explore and learn through spiritual, intellectual and social activities. Examples of the activities include holding ‘open discussions’ to discuss issues impacting women on a daily basis, and running regular sports activities.
Faeeza has resided in Birmingham for the past 15 years with her family but is originally from South Africa. After completing a law degree at the University of Leicester, UK in 2005, she went on to do an Honours degree in Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town, focussing on feminist theology and its relation to Islamic laws. Faeeza also recently completed a LLM in Socio-Legal Studies at Warwick University, UK. The specific topic of her dissertation is; ‘Notions of Scholarly Religious Knowledge Authorities in Muslim Societies and Muslim Women’s Movements as Challenges to the Current Status Quo.’
