Can You See Me?
Event Title  Can You See Me?
Posted Date  15/8/2019
Event Place  Birmingham

The Muslim Girls Fence (MFG) project in Birmingham has been holding a series of creative workshops with Muslim women and women of colour, exploring issues around identity, representation and misrepresentation of Muslim women in society.

The result of these conversations is a photo series, created in collaboration with photographer Sarah Ali. It involves a series of 'self-portraits' curated by the participants of MGF Birmingham. Telling their own stories on their own terms, they challenge prevailing biases and reductive narratives, sharing their experiences of being a Muslim woman/woman of colour in the UK today.

This is part of the nation-wide Muslim Girls Fence project, a collaboration between Maslaha and British Fencing aiming to challenge misperceptions of young Muslim women, in the light of the complex discrimination they face on the basis of both faith and gender, through sport and creativity.

You can see the exhibition on the launch night on Thursday 15th August. The exhibition will continue to be open to the public from 14th - 17th & 21st - 23rd August, 11am - 6pm.
